Why We Started YardAdviser

YardAdviser was built out of frustration.

Not with yard work — I actually enjoy that. The frustration was with the internet. Every time I searched for honest advice on outdoor equipment, I got the same thing: generic listicles, recycled specs, and “reviews” from writers who’d clearly never started a chainsaw in their lives.

So I built the resource I wished existed.

Hi, I’m Jason Hawes — Founder of YardAdviser

I’ve been working with outdoor power equipment for over 15 years. I maintain a large property in rural Tennessee, which means I’m not just writing about this stuff — I’m using it every season. I’ve run everything from vintage Ford 8Ns to modern Kubota compact tractors. I’ve diagnosed transmission problems, rebuilt carburetors, sharpened hundreds of mower blades, and spent way too many Saturday mornings figuring out why something wouldn’t start.

I hold a certification in small engine repair and have helped local farmers, landscapers, and neighbors troubleshoot equipment problems for years. Before launching YardAdviser, I contributed equipment guides to several regional agricultural and homesteading publications.

I know what it’s like to stand in a big-box store completely overwhelmed, or to call a dealer and get quoted $400 for a repair you could do yourself in 20 minutes. That’s exactly the gap YardAdviser fills.

How We Research

Every article on YardAdviser follows the same process:

  1. Manufacturer documentation — specs, service manuals, technical bulletins
  2. Real owner feedback — forums, owner communities, verified purchase reviews
  3. Hands-on knowledge — Jason’s direct experience with the equipment category
  4. Fact verification — all specs cross-checked against official sources before publication
  5. Regular updates — articles are revised when models change or reader feedback warrants it

We do not publish reviews of products we haven’t thoroughly researched. We do not accept payment for positive coverage.
